A major bank worth billions of dollars has issued a warning to its customers following a significant cybersecurity breach that has affected thousands of individuals. Western Alliance Bank recently disclosed to the Office of the Maine Attorney General that an unauthorized party exploited a vulnerability in a third-party file transfer software system utilized by the bank.
The breach, which was identified in late January and occurred in October, has impacted a total of 21,899 customers, as stated in the filing. The bank revealed that the unauthorized party potentially accessed some of its data on January 27, 2025. An investigation determined that the unauthorized party obtained certain files from the bank’s systems between October 12, 2024, and October 24, 2024. The compromised files contained personal information such as names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial account numbers, driver’s license numbers, tax identification numbers, and passport details for customers who provided this information to Western Alliance Bank.
In response to the breach, the bank has notified law enforcement authorities and is offering affected customers a 12-month complimentary membership to an identity-theft protection service.
