33 Republican Senators Finally Start Demanding Accountability for Hunter Biden

[ad_1]

Senate Republicans, in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, are requesting the prosecutor investigating Hunter Biden be given special counsel privileges.

A group of 33 senators, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, believes the move to be warranted since the target of the investigation is the son of the current President.

And, they noted the Department of Justice is currently embroiled in accusations of being a partisan political organization.

“Given the politicization of the DOJ under your watch and the importance of avoiding any appearance of impropriety, the undersigned request that you provide U.S. Attorney [David] Weiss the full protections and authorities of a special counsel,” the letter reads.

They add that doing so would be “one important action that you can take that will go a long way in restoring faith in our governmental institutions.”

Hunter Biden Special Counsel and What It Means

Weiss, the US attorney for Delaware, has been leading the investigation of Hunter Biden and his tax affairs.

CNN noted in July that the investigation had reached a “critical juncture” and was focused mainly on alleged tax violations and “making a false statement in connection with Biden’s purchase of a firearm.”

The revelation prompted former CNN anchor Brian Stelter, who tried his level best to poo-poo the story as ‘Russian misinformation,’ to fret that it could bring down President Biden’s campaign in 2024.

“What about Hunter? Hunter under federal investigation, charges could be coming at any time. This is not just a right-wing media story,” Stelter worried. “This is a real problem for the Bidens.”

“Could he decide not to run for re-election, given his son?”

The younger Biden’s laptop yielded a plethora of information regarding his business dealings, the gun purchase, and his penchant for drugs and prostitutes.

Giving Weiss special counsel privileges would give members of Congress some insight into any eventual decision by the prosecutor on whether or not to charge Biden’s son.

CNBC reports the move “would force Garland to explain to Congress any disagreement he had with an action proposed by Weiss during the probe, up to and including a recommendation that Hunter Biden be charged.”

Numerous Federal Crimes

The letter to Merrick Garland contends that evidence suggests Hunter Biden may have committed “numerous federal crimes.”

“There is no way of knowing the entire scope of the investigation, but evidence seems to be mounting that Hunter Biden committed numerous federal crimes, including, but not limited to, tax fraud, money laundering, and foreign-lobbying violations,” the letter reads.

The senators slam Garland’s DOJ for targeting election integrity laws in conservative states and conducting an unprecedented raid on a former President while ignoring violent threats against the Supreme Court and pro-life facilities.

Giving the Hunter Biden prosecutor special counsel protections would help maintain some level of trust that Garland can play on a level field.

“Given that the investigation involves the President’s son, we believe it is important to provide U.S. Attorney Weiss with special counsel authorities and protections to allow him to investigate an appropriate scope of potentially criminal conduct, avoid the appearance of impropriety, and provide additional assurances to the American people that the Hunter Biden investigation is free from political influence.”

An investigation free from political influence would seem a necessity.

The letter comes amidst recent claims from Senator Chuck Grassley, who says high-ranking FBI whistleblowers have accused the Bureau, along with the DOJ, of suppressing negative information about Hunter Biden prior to the 2020 election.

Grassley (R-IA), in a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Garland dated July 25th, claimed the FBI had information in 2020 on alleged “criminal financial and related activity” engaged in by Hunter Biden, but rather than investigate, set up a team to discredit it as ‘disinformation,’ a move that “caused investigative activity to cease.”

One FBI agent named by the whistleblowers as having suppressed negative information about Hunter Biden and his laptop and business dealings left the Bureau last month.

President Biden, in an interview with CBS News, maintained that his son’s foreign business deals were not a conflict of interest for him.

“There’s not a single thing that I’ve observed at all that would affect me or the United States relative to my son Hunter,” said the President.

Biden has met with several of Hunter’s business partners throughout the years.

“It is clear that Hunter Biden thrived off a ‘pay to play’ culture of access to his father, then Vice President Joe Biden in exchange for financial compensation,” the senators write.
