T.C. Taylor new head coach for JSU
T.C. Taylor will be the 22nd head coach in the history of Jackson State football. On Dec. 13, school vice president and athletic director Ashley Robinson announced Taylor. This hire aligns with Robinson’s mantra, “Building on Tradition, Blazing New Trails.”
The late Rashard Anderson, Sylvester Morris, and Taylor were all on the 1999 Tigers team, with Taylor playing quarterback and wide receiver. Both Morris and Anderson suggested the program hire Taylor as the head coach because he understands the team’s rich history and culture before JSU’s game-changing Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders era. After coming over from North Carolina Central, Taylor joined the Jackson State football coaching staff in 2019. Once Sanders was hired in September 2020, only Taylor and Otis Riddley remained as staffers.
“There is no question that T.C. loves and is passionate about Jackson State University,” Robinson said in the school’s official announcement. ”
No one matches his fervent desire and hunger to lead his alma mater as head coach. He has been prepared for this opportunity by his standard of excellence as a player as a JSU Tiger and his career trajectory as an assistant coach. He was chosen for the job because of his vision and plan to continue the championship excellence of Jackson State football. I am excited for him to lead our program in 2023 and beyond.
After sustaining several injuries, Taylor retired from playing football in 2003. He had previously played for the New England Patriots and Detroit Lions for brief periods in 2002.
Taylor was a quarterback and wide receiver for the Tigers from 1998-2001, including the 1999 team that featured two 2000 NFL Draft first-round picks: Sylvester Morris and the late Rashard Anderson. Both Morris and Anderson suggested that JSU hire Taylor as the head coach before the Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders era because he understands the team’s rich history and culture. After coming over from North Carolina Central, Taylor joined the Jackson State football coaching staff in 2019. After Sanders was hired in September 2020, only Taylor and Otis Riddley remained from the previous staff.
Robinson said in the school’s official announcement that T.C.’s passion and love for Jackson State University is unquestioned. ”
No one has a greater desire and hunger to lead their alma mater as head coach than him. This opportunity has been prepared for him by his standard of excellence as a player as a JSU Tiger and his career trajectory as an assistant coach. He was chosen for the job because of his vision and plan to continue the championship excellence of Jackson State football. I look forward to leading our program in 2023 and into the future.
Sanders recommended his former assistant to replace him. It was Taylor that Sanders leaned on in one of his early games at Jackson State to turn around the team’s offense.
“God is good, man,” Taylor told the team, according to a video uploaded by Thee Pregame Show. ”
I have fulfilled my obligations. went
“I am letting God order my steps. It got me here today, humble. For reals. This has been a dream of mine ever since I got into coaching, family. Do you want to get this opportunity? Would you like to lead in the place where you grew up? You guys played in the stadium I played in? “Are you saying that I am the 22nd head coach?” Man, it really means something to me.” Taylor stated.
Philip Short, quarterback for Holmes Community College, announced his commitment to Jackson State, kicking off the Taylor era. Short averaged 247 passing yards a game and threw 15 touchdowns to eight interceptions. With current quarterback Shedeur Sanders expected to follow his father to the University of Colorado, Short puts his name in the hat of potential successors.
A bigger recruiting splash than Seven McGee coming to the Tigers was former Oregon running back.
