The death of Brazilian football legend Pele at the age of 82 has left the world in mourning.
A 21-year career saw him score 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances, 77 of which came in 92 matches for his country – a world record.
In 2000, Pele was named Fifa’s Player of the Century. He is the only player to have won the World Cup three times, in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
He has suffered from kidney and prostate problems in recent years.
After the tumour was detected in routine tests, Pele had surgery to remove it from his colon in September 2021 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo. He was readmitted to the hospital in late November of 2022.
The daughter of musician Felipe Nascimento, Kely Nascimento, has kept fans updated on her father’s condition with regular social media updates from the hospital.
“Everything we are is thanks to you,” she wrote on Thursday, posting a picture of what appeared to be Pele’s family’s hands on his body in hospital. We love you very much. May your soul find peace.
