A 12-year-old girl fatally stabbed her 9-year-old brother inside their home, and police in Oklahoma began an investigation.
Law enforcement reported Friday that the stabbing took place late Thursday at home in the St. Thomas Square neighborhood in downtown Tulsa.
The Tulsa Police Department said that officers had learned that the children’s parents had been upstairs asleep when the 12-year-old daughter had woken the parent up and said that she had stabbed her 9-year-old brother.
According to a statement released by police, when officers arrived at the home, they found firefighters already performing CPR to the boy.
The release continues that the boy was rushed to the hospital by paramedics and underwent surgery but sadly died early Saturday.
Police said the girl was taken into custody and transported to a juvenile justice detention center.
Police Chief Wendell Franklin tweeted Friday that the slaying marked the city’s second homicide of 2023.
Tulsa police could not immediately be reached by USA TODAY Tuesday morning.
The motive for the slaying was not immediately known.
Alan Griffin said
“The court system will have to work out intent as a key component,” Tulsa Police Capt. Alan Griffin said “Richard Meulenberg told local outlet Fox 23,” she said. Interviews with a 12-year-old are very preliminary, but obviously, we did some interviews.
Oklahoma law states that anyone age 13 or older who is charged with first-degree murder will be prosecuted as an adult.
Police reported that the killing is being investigated by the Tulsa Police Child Crisis Unit.
It was not immediately known Tuesday whether the girl had been charged in the case or if she remained at the juvenile detention center.
