The Associated Press reported that a 5-year-old boy was swept away in floodwaters as another powerful storm battered California on Monday.
After seven hours of searching, the boy was not found and the search was called off due to dangerous water levels.
Near the coast, roughly 35 miles inland from it, a central town called San Miguel was where the mother of the boy was driving a truck around 7:50 a.m. Travis Craig said the vehicle became stranded in floodwaters while trying to cross a river. In a video interview with local media, the chief of the Cal Fire San Luis Obispo County Fire battalion spoke.
The boy was swept downstream, but the mother escaped the truck with the help of bystanders. A warning for a flash flood was later issued for the region.
Cal Fire and California Highway Patrol did not confirm NPR’s request for information.
Local media reported that a search for the boy, which involved 17 firefighters, professional divers and a helicopter, uncovered only his shoe. He has not been declared dead yet.
According to the Associated Press, the collective death toll from the recent storms has climbed to 14 with two additional deaths caused by falling trees on Monday.
