Police say three people were killed and the suspected shooter is dead following a random shooting in Yakima, Washington.

Authorities said an hours-long manhunt ended with the death of the man accused of fatally shooting three people at a Circle K convenience store and gas station in Yakima, Washington early Tuesday.

Yakima Police Chief Matthew Murray told reporters Tuesday afternoon that the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound as he was being apprehended.

Murray said that they believed with pretty good confidence that this was the person who was involved in the incident this morning.

Around 3:30 a.m. local time, the shooting at the Circle K was reported. According to Murray, the gunman then went across the street to a convenience store, shot into a car, and then stole it.

The chief said that it is possible the gunman shot the person in the car as he stole it. The driver would be the fourth shooting victim if so.

The suspect, 21-year-old Jarid Haddock of Yakima County, was identified by police. The chief said that he allegedly fled in a car that is believed to be a gray or silver Chrysler 200.

“Around 2:15 p.m. local time, police received a 911 call from a woman,” Murray said. “The woman said she had just lent her phone to the suspect and allegedly overheard him make incriminating statements while talking to his mother. The allegedly overheard statements included ‘I killed those people.'”

According to Murray, the woman then called 911 when she got her phone back and was able to tell police where the suspect was located.

He sure sounds happy”

“I listened to that call and he sure sounds happy.” “It’s pretty harrowing,” said Murray. She was very courageous in getting us there and I have to thank her again.

Police said the responding officers quickly found the suspect, who was injured by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to Murray, no officers fired at the suspect who was later pronounced dead by first responders.

Murray said the suspect had a “large amount of ammunition and a weapon” when he was found.

Murray called the Circle K shooting an attack that seems to have been done without any specific purpose. “He just walked in and started shooting,” the gunman said.

He said that the motive is not known.

“We’ll never know,” said Murray.
