6th officer in Tyre Nichols case released from duty
According to Memphis police, sixth officer involved in the Tyre Nichols traffic stop, Preston Hemphill, has been relieved of duty during an ongoing investigation.
Hemphill has not been fired or charged, she is white. A Memphis police spokesperson said Hemphill “was relieved when the other officers were relieved.”
Five Black officers were fired and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Nichols’ beating at a Jan. 7 traffic stop. 29-year-old Nichols died three days after the incident.
Lee Gerald, Hemphill’s attorney, said earlier that Hemphill was the third officer at Nichols’ initial traffic stop. The first body camera footage released was from the Hemphill police department.
“Officer Hemphill activated his bodycam,” Gerald said earlier in a statement, as per departmental regulations. He was never at the second scene. He is working with officials in this investigation.
The department hired Hemphill in 2018.
