3 Memphis EMTs were fired for their response to the fatal police beating of Tyre Nichols.

The Memphis Fire Department said that three EMTs who responded to the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols were fired Monday after an internal investigation.

On Jan. 7, the fire department found that Robert Long, JaMichael Sandridge and Lt. Michelle Whitaker had violated multiple department policies in their patient response to Nichols, the department said in a statement.

“The Memphis Fire Department expects its firefighters to act a certain way when responding to an emergency, and their actions that night did not meet those expectations,” the statement said. “The firefighters of Memphis provide outstanding service to our community every day, and this incident is not reflective of that service.”

“Person pepper sprayed,” the fire department noted, after police called at 8:31 p.m. for a traffic stop at the scene of Nichols’. Long, Sandridge, and Whitaker were sent to a second location and arrived to find Nichols leaning against a police vehicle 10 minutes after the call.

While Whitaker and a driver remained in the vehicle, Long and Sandridge responded to Nichols, the fire department said.

The fire department said that the investigation has concluded that the two EMT’s responded based on the initial nature of the call and the information that they were told on the scene. They failed to conduct an adequate patient assessment of Mr. Nichols.
