Family of Malcolm X prepares to file wrongful death lawsuit for concealing evidence in his murder
Fifty-eight years to the day since the assassination of the late and great Malcolm X, his family has made a formal announcement of plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the New York Police Department, as well as other government agencies, for allegedly being involved in his murder.
ABC News reported that the lawsuit will also name the NYPD, New York state, NYC, the FBI and the CIA.
The family of Malcolm X is taking legal action against the NYPD and other agencies for the wrongful death of the civil rights leader.
At the Shabazz Educational Center in Washington Heights on Tuesday, civil rights attorney Ben Crump was accompanied by members of Malcolm’s family. Crump claims that the agencies named possessed factual and exonerating evidence that they deceitfully kept from the men who were mistakenly found guilty of the murder of Malcolm X.
The Audubon building, where Malcolm had been murdered by three men 58 years prior, is now the home of the center. At the press conference, Crump stated,
In 2021, two of the three men who had served time for the 1965 murder were exonerated, according to CBS News. After Mujahid Abdul Halim admitted to his role in the shooting and stated that Muhammad A. Aziz and Khalil Islam had no involvement, it was determined that they had been wrongfully convicted.
At the press conference, Crump asked:
This begs the question: if the government awarded tens of millions of dollars to the two men wrongfully convicted for the assassination of Malcolm X, what should the compensation be for the daughters of Malcolm X who suffered the greatest loss?

Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X, stated that the family is in pursuit of “justice” for a person “who gave his life for human rights,” and that it is essential to understand “the circumstances leading to the death of our father.”
She said that for years their family has been fighting for the truth about his murder to be revealed and that they would like their father to get the justice he deserves. ”
It is essential that we uncover the truth behind the events that led to our father’s passing – not only for his family, but for his many admirers and followers. We hope that the proceedings of this case will finally shed light on any lingering questions. We demand that justice be served for our father.
At the Audubon Ballroom in 1965, Malcolm X, a minister and human rights advocate who had become a well-known leader in the American civil rights movement, was shot 21 times while preparing to give a speech.
It has been 58 years since his death, which occurred on Tuesday.
In October 2022, Muhammad Abdul Aziz and Khalil Islam – the two men exonerated in the 1965 assassination of Malcolm X – were granted a $36 million settlement after lawsuits were filed against the city and the state of New York on their behalf.
A lawsuit filed on behalf of Aziz and Islam, the latter of whom was exonerated posthumously in the killing, was settled for $26 million by New York City. New York State agreed to provide an additional $10 million in funding meanwhile.
As of Wednesday, none of the agencies had offered any comment on the wrongful death lawsuit.
