McDonald’s franchisees concerned with Cardi B and Offset Hot Date package
At McDonald’s, they hoped customers would enjoy a “hot meal for a special occasion.”
Franchisees have been pushing back against the new McDonald’s meal bundle featuring rap couple Cardi B and Offset.
Some owners argue that using the rappers in its advertisements violates the “Golden Arches Code,” a global set of policies which all McDonald’s franchisees, employees, agencies, and suppliers must adhere to, according to Bloomberg.
According to the 2021 marketing code, partnering with celebrities and influencers who could potentially damage our brand due to their remarks or stance on certain topics is not allowed. It was stated in the copy that partnerships associated with content that includes offensive language in the lyrics are forbidden.
Dick Adams, a former franchise owner and consultant, said, “It’s kind of a culture-shock thing when you consider the McDonald’s brand over the years.” If you are a franchisee, especially if you are 50 or 60 years old, without any children and not exposed to any of these types of lyrics, then this would apply to you.
Adams said he has talked to many franchisees who are concerned about it, but noted that it is good for sales and is endorsed by corporate, leading him to believe there is not a lot of pushback.
The franchisees are worried that the corporation is in danger due to the rappers’ music which contains profanity and sexual content. McDonald’s declared that they are taking great care to not use language that may be deemed offensive, and their new marketing efforts are proving successful, as they are gaining new customers.
In a statement, Tariq Hassan, chief marketing and customer experience officer for the U.S. market, declared that their focus is on placing McDonald’s at the center of culture. ”
Cardi and Offset have become an iconic couple over the years, with a longstanding tradition of having their own date-nights at McDonald’s. We are proud to be able to share a small portion of that.
