According to multiple news outlets, federal regulators have issued an ultimatum to TikTok’s China-based owners, threatening to ban the social media platform in the United States unless they sell their stake in the company. The move comes amid growing concerns about national security and data privacy. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS), a government agency with the power to review investments on national security grounds, reportedly made the ultimatum. ByteDance, the Beijing-based tech firm that owns TikTok, confirmed that it had been contacted by CFIUS but did not elaborate on the government’s request. TikTok argued that a change in ownership would not impose any new restrictions on data flows or access. Lawmakers have introduced legislation that would give the Commerce Department the power to ban certain foreign technology that poses an “undue or unacceptable risk” to Americans. TikTok’s links to China have faced increasing scrutiny in recent months, with concerns that the Chinese government could use the app to access Americans’ data. Former President Donald Trump previously tried to ban TikTok on national security grounds in 2020, but federal courts blocked the move.
