Deion Sanders has a word for the NFL for not choosing more athletes from HBCU’s
Deion Sanders, NFL legend and current head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, made headlines recently for accusing the league of snubbing talented players from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Sanders, also known as “Prime Time” or “Prime,” expressed disgust after only one player from an HBCU school was drafted by the 32 NFL teams this year. This is a significant decrease from last season when the league took three players while Sanders was at the helm of the Jackson State program in Mississippi.
Although Sanders cheered for his former Tigers cornerback Isaiah Bolden, who was picked in the seventh round by the New England Patriots, he reserved his repulsion for the league, saying he was “ashamed of” them. Sanders believes that there are many more talented players like Bolden and former Jackson State linebacker James Houston IV, who was selected by the Detroit Lions last year, just waiting to be discovered by the NFL.
However, some Twitter fans accused Sanders of hypocrisy, pointing out that he left Jackson State as soon as the Colorado job opened up and took several players with him to Boulder. Many sports fans feel that Sanders is not the best person to be offering his opinion on this matter.
Despite the backlash, Sanders remains an influential figure in the world of sports and has put HBCUs on the map. He believes that the NFL needs to do better and give these talented players the recognition they deserve. It remains to be seen if the league will heed his call and take action to correct this issue.
