In a historic moment for the city of Chicago, Brandon Johnson was inaugurated as the new mayor on May 15, 2023. The grand ceremony took place at the esteemed Credit One Arena, marking the beginning of a new era under Johnson’s leadership. As an educator and former Cook County Board commissioner, Johnson emerged victorious in the April 4, 2023 runoff election, defeating former Chicago Public School Superintendent Paul Vallas. Notably, Johnson becomes only the second Black man to hold the mayoral position since the election of Harold Washington in 1985.

The event commenced with a warm welcome for former Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who received a standing ovation as she presided over her final city council meeting. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as Grammy Award-winning gospel singer Karen Clark Sheard captivated the audience with her powerful rendition of “Total Praise.” Then, it was time for Johnson to take the oath of office and deliver his inaugural address.

Johnson’s speech resonated deeply with the essence of Chicago, emphasizing the city’s soul as a driving force for action. He acknowledged the historical significance by stating, “The soul of Chicago sent a Black Haitian man named Jean Baptiste Point DuSable to establish a city at the mouth of the Chicago River. It was alive in the hearts of tens of thousands, who arrived here in the Great Migration, including my grandparents, who came to Chicago in search of a home.”

Addressing the pressing issues confronting the city, Johnson expressed concern about the rising levels of violence, the lack of investment in the South and West sides, and the ongoing efforts to rebuild downtown after the devastating impact of the pandemic. In light of these challenges, he called for unity and transformation, rallying the people of Chicago to come together for the greater good.

“Chicago, a better day is ahead,” Johnson proclaimed, radiating hope. “Our stories extend far beyond this moment. They truly do. And I am grateful to be working alongside a government committed to that transformative vision.”

With his stirring words, Mayor Brandon Johnson set the stage for a period of change and progress, inspiring both optimism and a shared sense of purpose among the residents of Chicago.
