Russell Simmons Addresses Sexual Assault Allegations
Russell Simmons, the Def Jam co-founder, has recently opened up about the multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault that have been levied against him since 2017. In a new episode of “In Depth with Graham Bensinger,” Simmons addressed these allegations, maintaining his denial and discussing the impact they have had on his life.
Simmons admitted to being in “compromising situations” during his time as a music industry executive and acknowledged participating in activities like “foursomes.” However, he firmly denied ever being violent or forceful with anyone. He raised questions about the possibility of individuals reimagining stories or seeking notoriety, suggesting various reasons why the allegations might have come to light.
In his defense, Simmons revealed that he has taken nine separate lie-detector tests, one for each accusation made against him. He explained the rationale for taking these tests, especially in response to specific allegations, like claims of violence or apologies for assaulting anyone. Simmons asserted that he has never been violent and has never apologized for assaulting anyone.
Reflecting on the accuracy of lie detector tests, Simmons expressed confidence in their results, although he acknowledged that some people question their reliability. He also discussed the broader societal implications of the #MeToo movement and the importance of believing women, while also highlighting the need for proof before demonizing individuals.
Since 2017, eighteen women have accused Simmons of sexual harassment or rape. Simmons described the allegations as having “ruined [his] life,” emphasizing the personal and professional toll they have taken on him.
