Mattel Ventures into American Girl Movie Following Barbie’s Box Office Triumph
In the wake of the successful release of the “Barbie” movie, Mattel is set to expand its cinematic presence by creating a live-action feature film based on its renowned “American Girl” doll line. The decision aligns with the company’s strategy to capitalize on the popularity of its toy lines in the film industry.
Mattel, in collaboration with Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill Entertainment, is spearheading this new project. Lindsey Anderson Beer, known for her work on the Netflix film “Sierra Burgess is a Loser”, is slated to write the screenplay and produce the film. This move follows the immense success of “Barbie”, starring Margot Robbie, which recorded the biggest opening of the year. Mattel’s shares experienced a slight increase in extended trading following this announcement.
“American Girl” was founded in 1986 by Pleasant Rowland, a teacher-turned-entrepreneur. The brand has been celebrated for its unique approach to storytelling through dolls, books, live experiences, and television movies, each highlighting a different era in American history and focusing on the diverse experiences of young girls.
The American Girl film is poised to offer a rich narrative, deeply rooted in history and storytelling, resonating with its devoted fan base. Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Films, expressed excitement about bringing the American Girl story to the big screen, highlighting the brand’s long-standing impact on its fans.
This new venture is part of Mattel’s broader strategy to diversify its offerings and explore different media channels to showcase its popular toy lines. Along with the American Girl movie, Mattel Films is actively developing films based on other toys like Major Matt Mason, Hot Wheels, and a “Masters of the Universe” reboot.
