Netflix’s ‘The Leopard’ Gains Global Traction, Tours Italian Embassies

Netflix’s “The Leopard” has quickly captured the attention of viewers worldwide, with the sumptuous Sicilian series gaining global traction on the streaming giant. Following its release on March 5, the show has already garnered over 3 million views in its first five days and has secured a spot in the Top 10 in more than 30 countries, including Italy, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, and Spain.

The series, based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s classic novel set in Sicily, has been receiving widespread acclaim and is being showcased at gala presentations in Italian embassies across major world capitals. The Rome launch event, held at the Opera Theatre, was a glamorous affair attended by Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria and Italian ambassador to the U.S. Mariangela Zappia.

At a special screening in Washington, D.C., Zappia highlighted the profound themes of “The Leopard,” describing it as a poignant reflection on the changing times in Sicily during the 19th-century unification of Italy. The series delves into the social and political turmoil of the era, offering a moving portrayal of identity and survival.

In Berlin, the Italian embassy hosted a Sicilian-themed dinner with a live dance performance set to the show’s evocative soundtrack by Italian composer Paolo Buonvino. Similar events are planned in Paris and Madrid, showcasing the collaboration between Netflix and Italian institutions to promote the series.

“We are incredibly grateful for the enthusiastic support we have received from Italian communities across Europe for the series,” said Eleonora Andreatta, Netflix’s VP of Italian originals. Daniel Campos Pavoncelli, executive producer of “The Leopard,” expressed hope that the show would introduce viewers to the captivating narrative of the original novel.

“The Leopard” offers a modern interpretation of the Sicilian saga, set against the backdrop of social revolution in 1860s Sicily. The ensemble cast includes Deva Cassell in a breakout role as Angelica Sedara, Kim Rossi Stewart as Don Fabrizio Corbera, and Saul Nanni as Tancredi Falconeri. The series is helmed by British director Tom Shankland and features a script co-written by Richard Warlow and Benji Walters.

Produced by Italy’s Indiana Production and Moonage Pictures, “The Leopard” promises to captivate audiences with its lush visuals and compelling storytelling. With its blend of historical drama and contemporary sensibilities, the series is poised to leave a lasting impact on viewers worldwide.
