Kremlin After Putin Meets Trump’s Special Envoy Over Ukraine Ceasefire

Moscow:
The Kremlin announced on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had communicated with US President Donald Trump through his special envoy regarding a proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine, sparking “cautious optimism” in the process.
Putin engaged in late-night discussions in Moscow with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s representative, to deliberate on the US suggestion for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, as confirmed by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The proposal has already been accepted by Kyiv.
Peskov mentioned that Putin had relayed “signals” to Trump via Witkoff and had gained insights into US perspectives on Ukraine.
“There are grounds for being cautiously optimistic. Yesterday, President Putin made a significant statement in response to a journalist’s question. He expressed support for President Trump’s stance on reaching a resolution, while also raising certain queries that require joint addressing,” Peskov stated.
“Therefore, there is still work to be done, but the president has shown solidarity with Mr. Trump’s position.”
Peskov indicated that Russia and the US would coordinate the scheduling of a phone call between their respective presidents once Witkoff had briefed Trump.
