One dead, two critically injured after vehicle flees police

Inspector Peter Raynes of Tāmaki Makaurau Police reported that the incident occurred around 2pm when a police vehicle attempted to pull over a car speeding along Great South Road. The driver of the car failed to stop and instead led police on a dangerous chase, resulting in the devastating crash.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while one person from another vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual sustained critical injuries, with a third person in moderate condition.
The Serious Crash Unit is currently investigating the accident, and the affected road remains closed as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident. A ‘Critical Incident Investigation’ has been initiated to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the crash, with a focus on providing support to the victims and their families, as well as the police personnel involved.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority has also been notified of the incident, ensuring a thorough examination of the events that transpired on that fateful Sunday afternoon.
