Cancer-stricken mother of murdered NJ woman stabbed 37 times fearful she’ll die before delayed trial goes to court

The tragic murder of Maryrose Fealey in January 2024 continues to haunt her family and friends, as the trial of her accused killer, David Shroitman, has faced numerous delays. Maryrose’s mother, Janet Pizzelli, who is battling cancer, fears that she may not live to see justice served for her daughter.
Maryrose, a Rutgers Business School graduate known for her selfless acts and dedication to helping others, was brutally stabbed 37 times outside her Somerville apartment. Shroitman, a former classmate of Maryrose, was arrested days later with a manifesto detailing his plans for the murder. Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Shroitman’s defense has argued that he is not psychologically competent to stand trial.
As the trial date continues to be pushed back, Janet’s health has deteriorated significantly. She has undergone a double mastectomy, suffered from severe side effects of chemotherapy, and now relies on a cane to get around. The stress of the ongoing legal battle has taken a toll on her already fragile health.
Maryrose’s friends and family have started an organization called “100 Voices for Maryrose” to keep her memory alive and push for a swift trial. They are determined to ensure that Shroitman does not escape justice due to delays in the legal process.
Janet fondly remembers her daughter’s kindness and generosity, citing instances where Maryrose went above and beyond to help others, including giving away her car to a woman in need and supporting her brother through his battle with addiction. The absence of Maryrose’s support during Janet’s cancer treatment has been especially difficult for her to bear.
Despite the heartbreaking loss of her daughter, Janet remains determined to see justice served. She recalls the last words Maryrose said to her before the tragic incident, offering comfort and reassurance in the face of uncertainty. The pain of losing her daughter and the uncertainty of the legal proceedings weigh heavily on Janet, but she remains hopeful that justice will prevail in the end.
