FilmSharks Pickup ‘Virgins’ Debuts at Malaga Film Festival

FilmSharks, a renowned film distribution company based in Buenos Aires, has acquired the global rights to “Virgins” (“Virgenes”), the latest comedy directed by Álvaro Díaz Lorenzo, known for his work on “Lord, Give Me Patience.” The film is set to premiere at the Malaga Film Festival on March 17, with Filmax, a prominent independent studio, planning a theatrical release on June 20 this year.

“Virgins” boasts a talented cast including César Vicente Romero, Xavi Caudevilla, and Carlos Scholz. The story is set in the 1960s in Torremolinos, a popular tourist destination in Southern Spain where young men from Northern Europe flock during the winter months.

The teaser for the film, featured in Variety, introduces us to three friends – Honorio, Rafa, and Vicente – on a mission to lose their virginity to Swedish tourists in Torremolinos. The friends embark on a road trip filled with misadventures and self-discovery as they seek to break free from their mundane lives.

Director Álvaro Díaz Lorenzo describes “Virgins” as a tribute to the cultural transformation of the Costa del Sol during that era. Drawing inspiration from the stories of his family members who lived through that period, Lorenzo aims to capture the essence of a generation experiencing newfound freedom and excitement.

FilmSharks’ head of International Sales & Acquisitions, Federico Pascua, expresses excitement about collaborating with Díaz Lorenzo on this bold and humorous project. He believes that the film’s unique blend of classic comedy elements with a modern twist will resonate with audiences worldwide.

Díaz Lorenzo’s connection to Malaga runs deep, having grown up in Fuengirola. His previous films, such as “Café solo o con ellas” and “La Despedida,” have garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, leading to U.S. remake rights being sold to major studios.

“Virgins” is a co-production between Spal Films, Vaca Films, and Volf Entertainment, with support from the ICAA Spanish Film Institute and other cultural institutions. The film will be screened out of competition at the Malaga Film Festival, showcasing the best of Spanish cinema.

Overall, “Virgins” promises to be a delightful and nostalgic comedy that captures the spirit of a bygone era. With a talented cast, experienced director, and support from industry partners, the film is poised to be a success both at the festival circuit and in theatrical release.
