‘One Piece’ Showrunner Exits Netflix Series to Focus on Mental Health

Matt Owens, one of the co-showrunners of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the immensely popular manga “One Piece,” has made the decision to step away from the series in order to prioritize his mental health. The announcement was made in a heartfelt Instagram post on Owens’ personal page, where he expressed gratitude for the transformative experience of working on the show for the past six years.
In his post, Owens acknowledged the incredible opportunity to work on “One Piece” but also recognized the toll it had taken on him. He mentioned the need to take a break, focus on his well-being, and engage in therapy. Netflix supported his decision, with the official “One Piece” account reposting his message and praising his contribution to the series.
Owens initially served as co-showrunner for Season 1 alongside Steven Maeda before Maeda transitioned to an executive producer role for Season 2. Joe Tracz took over showrunning duties for Season 2 and continues to lead the series following Owens’ departure.
The live-action adaptation of “One Piece” features a talented cast including Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero, and Taz Skylar. The series, developed in collaboration with Shueisha, is produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix. Executive producers Eiichiro Oda, Marty Adelstein, and Becky Clements are also instrumental in bringing the beloved manga to life on screen.
As fans eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the “One Piece” saga, Owens’ decision to prioritize his mental health serves as a reminder of the importance of self-care in the fast-paced world of television production. His departure may mark the end of an era, but it also paves the way for new creative opportunities and fresh adventures in the world of entertainment.
