WinCo Foods opening discount grocery store in metro Denver

WinCo Foods is set to make its Colorado debut with plans to build a nearly 84,000-square-foot grocery store at the southeast corner of East 164th Avenue and Washington Street in Thornton. The Idaho-based grocery store, known for its warehouse-style stores offering low prices and a variety of bulk items, submitted plans to the City of Thornton earlier this year.

The single-story building will be painted in a neutral bronze color and will feature two signs. The property, spanning 16.8 acres, will include approximately 455 parking spaces, landscaping, and future pad sites.

WinCo Foods’ employee-owned stores typically operate 24/7, closing only on part of Thanksgiving, part of Christmas Eve, and all of Christmas Day. The company’s name stands for “Winning Company.”

The two parcels of land necessary for the grocery store’s development, located at 16380 and 16350 Washington St., are owned by Clyde E Webb Family LLC. However, a zoning amendment is required to combine the parcels and re-zone the area to accommodate the store’s size.
