Star of Original ‘Dennis the Menace’ TV Show Was 73

Jay North, best known for his role as Dennis Mitchell in the original 1959 “Dennis the Menace” TV series, passed away on Sunday after battling cancer, as confirmed by his long-time friend Laurie Jacobson in a heartfelt social media post. North, who was 73 years old, had been fighting cancer for a number of years before peacefully passing away at home.

The iconic TV series, based on the popular comic strip by Hank Ketcham, ran for 146 episodes over four seasons. North portrayed the mischievous young boy Dennis Mitchell, whose antics often caused chaos for his neighbor Mr. George Wilson, played by Joseph Kearns. The show also featured a talented cast including Herbert Anderson, Gloria Henry, Billy Booth, Sylvia Field, and Gale Gordon.

Following the conclusion of “Dennis the Menace” in 1963, North continued to make appearances in various TV shows such as “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “The Lucy Show,” “My Three Sons,” and “Jericho.” Additionally, he lent his voice to animated series like “Arabian Knights,” “Here Comes the Grumps,” “The Banana Splits Adventure Hour,” and “The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show.” His final starring role was in the 1974 thriller “The Teacher.”

Born on August 3, 1951, in Hollywood, North developed a passion for television at a young age. He began his acting career by appearing in commercials and small roles on popular variety shows. At just six years old, he landed the lead role in “Dennis the Menace,” catapulting him to fame and establishing him as a beloved child actor.

North’s passing has left a void in the hearts of his fans, friends, and colleagues. Despite facing challenges in Hollywood and beyond, he was remembered for his immense talent, kind heart, and deep love for his friends.
