UN special envoy Julie Bishop makes first trip to war-torn Myanmar after big quake

BANGKOK — The United Nations special envoy for Myanmar paid her inaugural visit to the military-ruled nation since assuming office last year. During her visit, she met with the foreign minister to discuss the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that claimed the lives of over 3,600 individuals.
The envoy, Julie Bishop from Australia, held discussions with Foreign Minister Than Swe and other officials at a temporary location outside the ministry’s damaged premises in Naypyitaw, the capital severely impacted by the earthquake on March 28.
The earthquake resulted in extensive devastation across six regions and states, leading to power outages, disrupted communication lines, and damaged infrastructure. This further compounded the challenges faced by Myanmar due to the ongoing civil conflict.
According to Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for the military government, the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 3,649, with thousands more injured and missing.
The state-run newspaper reported that the earthquake destroyed tens of thousands of homes, religious structures, schools, government offices, and other critical facilities, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
During the meeting, discussions revolved around the coordination between Myanmar and the United Nations to provide aid to the earthquake-affected population. The envoy’s appointment had previously sparked controversy over alleged business ties with Chinese companies, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
Despite unilateral ceasefires declared by the conflicting parties to facilitate relief efforts, reports indicate ongoing hostilities, underscoring the volatile situation in Myanmar following the political upheaval in early 2021.
The envoy’s visit aims to strengthen the UN’s commitment to promoting peace and dialogue in the region, amidst the escalating humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the recent earthquake.
With millions displaced and in urgent need of assistance, international support is crucial to address the pressing humanitarian needs and facilitate a sustainable resolution to the crisis in Myanmar.
As efforts continue to mitigate the impact of the earthquake and address the underlying challenges in Myanmar, the role of the UN and its partners remains pivotal in fostering stability and promoting inclusive development in the nation.
