Bowen Yang Thinks SNL Cast Should Be Able Say ‘S—‘ and ‘F—‘ On Air

Bowen Yang Advocates for More Freedom in Language on “Saturday Night Live”

Comedian and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Bowen Yang recently sparked a conversation about the limitations on language on the iconic sketch comedy show. During an episode of his podcast “Las Culturistas,” Yang expressed his desire to be able to say more expletives on air, specifically advocating for the allowance of five “shits” and five “fucks” per season.

Yang pointed out a recent incident on “SNL” where a spontaneous outburst from the audience in response to a joke by Ego Nwodim resulted in the word “shit” being yelled in the studio. Despite potential FCC regulations, the show seemed to escape any consequences for the slip-up, leading Yang to declare it as his “favorite moment in televised history.”

Expressing frustration with the restrictions on language, Yang emphasized the comedic power of words like “shit” and “fuck” and suggested that allowing their use could elevate the quality of sketches on the show. He even proposed the idea of turning the allowance of swear words into a voting system similar to “American Idol,” or creating a legal defense fund in case of any repercussions.

While Yang’s co-hosts, including “SNL” alum Amy Poehler, acknowledged the potential comedic tension that comes from not being able to swear, they also entertained the idea of loosening the restrictions, especially for departing cast members like Kenan Thompson.

The conversation highlighted the ongoing debate around censorship and creative freedom on network television, particularly within the realm of live comedy. As “SNL” continues to push boundaries and challenge norms, the question of language restrictions remains a relevant and contentious issue for both the cast and the audience.
