Trump says ‘I could’ get Abrego Garcia back from El Salvador

President Donald Trump recently sat down with ABC News for an exclusive interview to discuss his first 100 days in office. One of the topics that came up was the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador. The Supreme Court has ordered that Abrego Garcia be returned to the United States, but Trump seemed hesitant to comply.
During the interview, ABC News anchor Terry Moran pressed Trump on what he was doing to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return. Trump deflected by claiming that the lawyer who called it a mistake was not appointed by his administration and suggested that Abrego Garcia was a member of the MS-13 gang. However, Abrego Garcia’s lawyers have maintained that he is not affiliated with MS-13 and has no criminal record.
Moran reminded Trump that the Supreme Court’s order stands, regardless of Abrego Garcia’s past actions. He even pointed out the phone on Trump’s desk, suggesting that the president could easily call the president of El Salvador and request Abrego Garcia’s return. Trump acknowledged that he could make that call, but seemed reluctant to do so.
Despite Moran’s insistence that as president, Trump had the power to rectify the situation, Trump continued to argue about the rule of law and the circumstances of Abrego Garcia’s entry into the country. He placed blame on his predecessor, claiming that he was elected to fix problems caused by a previous administration.
The interview highlighted Trump’s reluctance to take action in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, despite the Supreme Court’s order for his return. It also shed light on Trump’s views on immigration and his commitment to upholding the law, even in controversial cases. The conversation between Trump and Moran showcased the complexities of immigration policy and the challenges of enforcing it effectively.
