Amazon CEO warns Americans price of everyday goods will rise from Trump’s tariff push

The CEO of Amazon, Andy Jassy, recently issued a warning to customers about potential price hikes on common items due to President Trump’s tariff agenda. In an interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin on “Squawk Box,” Jassy stated that the tariffs could lead to “macro issues” impacting everyday consumers. He mentioned that sellers may pass on the additional costs to customers, leading to higher prices.

Jassy also highlighted the challenges Amazon faces in dealing with increased demand for cheap products made overseas, without specifically mentioning China. Despite the uncertainties, he emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining competitive prices for customers. Amazon plans to implement strategies like strategic inventory buys and renegotiating deals with suppliers to prevent significant price increases.

The CEO acknowledged the concerns of other companies, such as Warner Brothers, Delta, and Walmart, regarding tariffs and their potential impact on consumer demand and inflation. While Amazon communicates regularly with the Trump administration on various issues, including tariffs, Jassy declined to comment on reports of the company bidding on the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok.

Overall, Amazon’s stock experienced a slight drop following Jassy’s warning, but it has seen overall growth in recent weeks. Despite the uncertainties surrounding tariffs and trade policies, the company remains focused on providing a seamless customer experience and keeping prices as low as possible for consumers.
