Angler lands likely world record 7-foot beast from Texas lake in life-challenging catch: ‘True 1% likelihood’

The fishing world in Texas recently witnessed the triumphant return of a world-record fishing champion, Art Weston, who added another remarkable chapter to his fishing saga. Accompanied by his fishing guide, Captain Kirk Kirkland, Weston managed to reel in a massive alligator gar while aboard his appropriately named boat, the “Garship Enterprise.”

On April 8, Weston made history by landing the largest freshwater fish on ultra-light tackle in the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) records. This achievement adds to his impressive collection of over 40 world records, solidifying his status as a fishing legend.

The battle between Weston and the 153-pound, 7-foot-3-inch alligator gar lasted for nearly four exhausting hours. Weston’s goal for the day was to surpass the existing 110-pound record for catching an alligator gar on a delicate 2-pound test line.

To increase his chances of success, Weston and Kirkland came prepared with 6-foot steel leaders and sturdy J-hooks, following IGFA regulations. The reel drag was set lightly, relying more on the fish tiring itself out than brute force.

When the massive gar initially struck, Weston admitted that its size was not immediately apparent. However, they decided to pursue the catch, leading to a challenging and intense battle. The stubborn fish remained deep in the water, often swimming 8-12 feet below the boat and even resting on the bottom for extended periods.

After a hard-fought struggle, Weston and Kirkland managed to bring the giant gar ashore. The fish was quickly weighed, measured, and photographed before being released back into Lake Livingston unharmed.

Once officially certified by the IGFA, Weston’s incredible catch will stand as the largest freshwater fish ever recorded worldwide on a 2-pound test line. It will also rank as the sixth-largest fish of any species, freshwater or saltwater, caught on such light tackle.

Weston expressed his gratitude towards Kirkland for his assistance in landing the challenging catch, describing it as a “true 1% likelihood catch.” The entire experience showcased Weston’s skill, determination, and passion for fishing, solidifying his reputation as a true fishing champion.
