Animation Community, Sotheby’s Announce Fundraising Auction

The Art of Animation auction, part of the AnimAID fundraising campaign, is set to feature rare and unique pieces of animation history. Original drawings, paintings, animation cels, and maquette figures from beloved films and series like “Snow White,” “The Simpsons,” and “Beauty and the Beast” will be up for auction. These items, donated by major studios including Disney, Warner Brothers, and DreamWorks Animation, aim to support members of the animation community impacted by the recent Los Angeles wildfires.
In addition to these collectible items, the auction will also offer exclusive experiences. Bidders can vie for the chance to voice a minor character in Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming film “Goat” or receive a custom character design by renowned character designer Nico Marlet. Studio tours of Disney, Sony, DreamWorks, and Lucasfilm, as well as a Peanuts experience at the Charles M. Schulz Museum, will also be available for auction.
AnimAID, a collaboration between ASIFA-Hollywood and industry talent, aims to provide essential relief to those affected by the wildfires while honoring the contributions of animation professionals. The auction will showcase highlights such as a story sketch from “Tortoise and the Hare,” 3D-printed Pinocchio faces from “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” and a special drawing of Woody and Buzz Lightyear to commemorate the 30th anniversary of “Toy Story.”
The auction will take place online from April 23 to 30, with select pieces on display at Sotheby’s New York galleries from April 11 to 15. Aubry Mintz, executive director of AnimAID and ASIFA-Hollywood, emphasizes the unity and compassion of the animation community in coming together to support those in need. The initiative not only provides relief but also celebrates the talented artists who have contributed to the world of animation. The generosity of collaborators and the public’s support are deeply appreciated, making this auction a unique opportunity to own a piece of animation history while making a difference.
