Apple TV+’s ‘Carême’ Combines Sex, Haute Cuisine and Rock’n’Roll

The world’s first celebrity chef, Marie-Antoine Carême, rose to fame during the Napoleonic era. However, the creators of the Apple TV+ series “Carême” drew inspiration from other iconic figures, such as Lenny Kravitz and Mick Jagger, to bring a modern twist to the historical narrative.

Star Benjamin Voisin, along with costume designer Pierre-Jean Larroque, aimed to infuse Carême’s character with a sexy and liberated aura, reminiscent of rock’n’roll icons. Director Martin Bourboulon, known for his work on period dramas, sought to avoid the typical conventions of the genre and present Carême as a seductive and rebellious figure.

In the series, based on Ian Kelly’s book “Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef,” Carême garners attention from influential figures through his elaborate culinary creations and inadvertently saves Napoleon’s life. He navigates the political landscape, challenging diplomat Talleyrand and captivating Joséphine Bonaparte along the way.

Voisin, who portrays Carême, delves into the character’s complex journey of self-discovery, passion, and political intrigue. The series explores Carême’s evolution from a fiery young chef to a seasoned player in the political arena.

Bourboulon faced the challenge of capturing the essence of Carême’s culinary artistry on screen, using close-ups and sensual imagery to showcase the allure of his dishes. The show not only celebrates French gastronomy but also emphasizes the importance of following one’s dreams and embracing passion without fear of failure.

With a talented cast including Lyna Khoudri, Jérémie Renier, and Frank Molinaro, “Carême” sheds light on a lesser-known historical figure and his remarkable contributions to both the culinary and political realms. The series promises a blend of drama, intrigue, and delectable delights, inviting viewers to rediscover the joys of a good meal and the power of pursuing one’s true calling.

“Carême” is set to premiere globally on Apple TV+ on April 30, 2025, offering audiences a glimpse into the fascinating world of a revolutionary chef who dared to defy conventions and leave a lasting legacy. Stay tuned for more seasons and exciting developments in the captivating journey of Carême.
