Arkansas parents handed 70-year prison sentence for trapping their 4 children in hot car — killing toddler — as another perished from malnutrition

Arkansas Parents Sentenced to 70 Years for Leaving Toddler to Die in Hot Car

Two Arkansas parents, Deja and Justin Rollins, were handed a 70-year prison sentence each for leaving their toddler to die in a hot car with three other children. The prosecutors described the case as one of the most disturbing they have ever seen.

The tragic incident occurred on July 7, 2024, when the couple trapped their four children, aged 2, 4, 7, and 10, inside a stifling car while rushing their fifth child, a 3-year-old, to a children’s hospital in Little Rock. The 3-year-old tragically died of severe malnutrition, prompting an investigation into the well-being of the other children.

Prosecuting attorney Will Jones stated, “This case is one of the most disturbing and heartbreaking our office has ever encountered. Protecting children is our top priority, and we will ensure that those who harm a child are held fully accountable.”

Deja and Justin left their four children locked inside the car at Arkansas Children’s Hospital while their 3-year-old received urgent medical treatment. Police responded to a report of child abuse and neglect and found the car outside the hospital, despite the couple withholding the location.

The children were treated for heat exhaustion at the hospital, but tragically, the youngest child, Jay’Dien Rollins, succumbed to fatal heat exhaustion and severe malnutrition the following day.

According to prosecutors, one of the surviving children showed physical injuries consistent with ongoing abuse. Additionally, a malnourished dog was found at the couple’s home and taken into custody by Jacksonville Animal Services.

Deja and Justin pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and first-degree domestic battery. Prosecuting attorney Will Jones commended the coordinated efforts of professionals in securing a resolution that reflects the gravity of the crimes and ensures justice for the children.
