SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Tragedy struck in the Dominican capital as at least 44 people lost their lives and 160 others sustained injuries in a horrific incident at an iconic nightclub. The roof of the Jet Set nightclub collapsed during a merengue concert, attended by politicians, athletes, and other guests.

Rescue crews worked tirelessly to search for survivors in the rubble of the one-story nightclub. Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Center of Emergency Operations, expressed hope in finding more survivors and vowed to continue the rescue mission until everyone was accounted for.

The confirmed death toll stood at 44, with at least 160 individuals injured. Among the victims was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi, who tragically perished in the collapse. The injured included former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, legislator Bray Vargas, and merengue singer Rubby Pérez.

Witnesses described the chaotic scene as the roof gave way during the concert, leading to a frantic rescue effort. The cause of the collapse remains unknown, as authorities and the nightclub’s management cooperate in the investigation.

President Abinader expressed his condolences and assured that all resources were being mobilized to assist those affected. He visited the site of the tragedy, offering comfort to grieving families and expressing hope for more survivors.
