Author who overcame paralysis ready to run first half marathon

Shaunta-Maé Alexander’s incredible journey to the start line of the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon is nothing short of inspirational. The 35-year-old children’s book author and aspiring actress, hailing from Sacramento, California, has faced a lifetime of health challenges, including paralysis and Crohn’s disease. Despite these obstacles, Alexander is determined to conquer her first half marathon with the help of the New York Road Runners’ Athletes with Disabilities program.

Guided by Brooklyn-based Peloton instructor Tunde Oyeneyin, Alexander found the motivation to push past her limitations and pursue her athletic dreams. She credits the Peloton community for inspiring her to strive for more, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Alexander’s health struggles began at a young age, with stomach pains and difficulty eating leading to a Crohn’s disease diagnosis in high school. The chronic condition made everyday activities a challenge, impacting her physical and mental well-being. In 2019, a severe Crohn’s flare-up resulting from food poisoning left her paralyzed, a devastating setback that tested her resilience.

Determined to reclaim her mobility and independence, Alexander embarked on a journey of strength training and rehabilitation. With the support of Oyeneyin and the Peloton community, she gradually regained her ability to walk, jog, and eventually run. Her perseverance paid off as she completed her first 5K in 2023 and has since participated in several races.

Now, as she prepares for her first half marathon, Alexander is fundraising for NYRR Team for Kids to support children facing similar challenges. Her story serves as a testament to the power of determination and the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity.

As she takes on the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon, Alexander is grateful for the support of Oyeneyin and the unwavering encouragement of her family and friends. Her journey is a reminder that with perseverance and a supportive community, anything is possible.
