BBC, ZDF Order Flirty Spy Thriller ‘Honey’ From ‘Killing Eve’ Producer

BBC and ZDF Join Forces for New Cold War Thriller “Honey”
The U.K. network BBC and German broadcaster ZDF have come together to order a new darkly comedic Cold War thriller called “Honey.” This exciting collaboration is from Sally Woodward Gentle’s Sid Gentle Films, the production company behind the critically acclaimed series “Killing Eve.” Global distribution for the series will be handled by Fifth Season.
Written by Emma Moran, known for her work on the Disney+ comedy series “Extraordinary” and Netflix’s drama “How to Kill Your Family,” “Honey” delves into the world of counter espionage in 1980s East Berlin. Described as “tender and flirty, slick and dangerous,” the six-part series promises to be a thrilling watch.
Set in East Berlin in 1982, “Honey” follows Marta, a deep cover agent for MI6, as she navigates a world filled with enemies and constant threats to her cover being exposed. Caught between the new head of counter espionage for the Stasi, Friedrich Bauman, and the charming CIA operative Aaron Neeland, Marta finds herself entangled in a dangerous and seductive love triangle.
Moran expressed her excitement for the project, stating, “I’m excited to dig into the sexy madness of our version of Cold War East Berlin. Romantic comedy plus espionage is a dream combination for me.” Woodward Gentle praised the series for its smart and highly charged storyline, while Lindsay Salt of BBC Drama described “Honey” as a smart and irresistible tale of espionage and romance.
Arvand Khosravi, senior VP of scripted television strategy at Fifth Season, lauded “Honey” as ground-breaking and elevated, with strong international interest already being shown in the series. Moran serves as the lead writer and executive producer, with Emme Hoy also contributing as a writer. Executive producers include Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris, with Christopher Hall as the producer.
Commissioned for BBC iPlayer and BBC One by Lindsay Salt and ZDF by Frank Seyberth, “Honey” promises to be a must-watch series that subverts genre conventions in the best possible way. Keep an eye out for this exciting new Cold War thriller that is sure to captivate audiences worldwide.
