Blue Jays’ Kevin Gausman takes embarrassing tumble after ejection

Kevin Gausman’s eventful day at Yankee Stadium on Sunday was filled with ups and downs, quite literally. The Blue Jays pitcher struggled on the mound, giving up six runs on five walks and two hits before getting pulled from the game. As if that wasn’t enough, he was later ejected and, while jawing at the umpire, took a tumble down the clubhouse stairs.

The mishap was captured by the YES Network cameras during the first game of a doubleheader. The clip showed Gausman walking down the dugout, visibly upset and yelling in the direction of the umpire on the field. As he reached the stairs, he lost his footing while still focused on the field, resulting in a comical tumble out of sight of the camera.

The fall down the stairs was the cherry on top of a rough day for Gausman, who was clearly frustrated with his performance on the mound. He was ejected after a disastrous third inning where he threw 53 pitches and gave up six runs to the Yankees. This inning marked the most pitches thrown by a pitcher in a single frame since Cam Vieaux of the Pirates tossed 56 pitches in a game against the Brewers in July 2022.

Gausman’s previous high for pitches in an inning was 44 back in 2017 when he was with the Orioles. Home-plate umpire Chris Conroy ejected him from the game, a decision that wasn’t surprising given Gausman’s displeasure with some of the calls. Toronto manager John Schneider also found himself ejected later in the game after arguing a strike call.

The Yankees went on to win the game 11-2, setting the stage for a potential sweep of the doubleheader and series victory. Gausman’s eventful day serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of baseball and the highs and lows that come with the game.
