CBS News price tracker shows how much food, gas, utility and housing costs are rising

Despite tariff reversal, some prices could still increase. Here’s why.
Consumers are facing ongoing challenges with the rising cost of living and the potential impact of tariffs. CBS News is closely monitoring the changes in prices for everyday household expenses, including food, utilities, and rent.
Utilizing a combination of government and private data sources, we have created tracking charts that illustrate the fluctuations in the cost of goods and services since before the pandemic up to the most recent data available, which is typically up to the end of March for most items.
Our price tracker relies on data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for food, household goods, and services, as well as data from Zillow for rent and home purchase prices. Each chart includes a link to the original data source for transparency.
For recurring household expenses such as rents and home sales, the data cited for 2025 is current up to last month and is compared to the same month in previous years dating back to 2019. You can select a specific item below to view the year-by-year changes or explore all items in the table below the chart.
As we navigate through these economic challenges, it is essential to stay informed about the changing landscape of prices and be proactive in managing our finances. Stay tuned for more updates on price trends and economic developments.
