Chaplain hopes to give back

A new rural chaplain has been welcomed into the Gore district with open arms, ready to serve the community, lend a listening ear, and offer support on life’s journey.

Alison Moore was officially commissioned as a chaplain at the Calvin Community Church last Sunday, recognizing her dedication to the community and her strong faith.

According to Invercargill-based Chaplain Barb Walker, the role of a chaplain is not about conversion, but rather about providing assistance and being a comforting presence when needed.

“Our main goal is to embody peace,” explained Walker. “We don’t aim to push our beliefs onto others. Instead, we listen to their words and their unspoken feelings. Each person has their own story, and it’s our privilege to listen and support them.”

Walker emphasized the importance of chaplains, particularly in light of the mental and emotional challenges faced by many rural New Zealanders.

“Chaplains play a crucial role in our society, especially now when many people are feeling anxious and overwhelmed. By simply stopping to ask how someone is doing and truly listening to their response, we can make a significant impact,” she noted.

Now, Moore is ready to step into this important role, drawing on her experience in the rural sector from her work with the Rural Support Trust and her deep-rooted faith.

Reflecting on her journey to becoming a chaplain, Moore shared, “When I first learned about rural chaplaincy, it felt like a calling. As a former farmer, I felt a strong connection to this role. It’s a bit scary, but I’m excited to give back to the community.”

Moore believes that her personal experiences, including enduring natural disasters and the loss of her husband, have equipped her to support others through tough times.

“I’ve been through challenging situations, and my faith has been a source of strength. I understand the struggles that rural communities face, and I hope to offer guidance and support to those in need,” she expressed.
