‘Clean Slate’ Canceled After One Season at Amazon

Amazon’s comedy series “Clean Slate” has been canceled after just one season, according to a confirmation from Variety. The show, which premiered on Prime Video in February, featured a star-studded cast including Laverne Cox, George Wallace, Jay Wilkison, D.K. Uzoukwu, Telma Hopkins, Philip Garcia, and Norah Murphy. Notably, the series was the final project completed by the legendary Norman Lear before his passing in 2023.
The premise of “Clean Slate” revolves around Harry Slate, played by George Wallace, an outspoken car wash owner from Alabama who is forced to confront his own beliefs when his estranged child, Desiree, portrayed by Laverne Cox, returns home as a proud transgender woman. The series was co-created by Wallace and Cox, along with Dan Ewen, and was executive produced by Norman Lear, Brent Miller, and Simran Baidwan. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios were responsible for production.
Originally in development at Peacock in 2020, “Clean Slate” made its way to Amazon’s IMDB TV (later Freevee) in 2021 before being picked up as a series in 2022. Following the closure of Freevee, the show found its home on Prime Video. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, with an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series unfortunately did not secure a second season.
In her review for Variety, Aramide Tinubu praised the show for its portrayal of the transgender experience, stating, “‘Clean Slate’ isn’t perfect, but it showcases the transgender experience with beautiful humanity. While Harry doesn’t always understand Desiree’s perspective, he extends his hands toward her even in his most stubborn moments.”
Deadline was the first to report the cancellation of “Clean Slate.” Despite its short-lived run, the series left a lasting impact on viewers and critics alike with its heartfelt storytelling and standout performances.
