Clem Burke, Drummer Of Iconic Rock Group Blondie, Dead At 70

Clem Burke, the legendary drummer whose dynamic beats propelled the iconic rock band Blondie through various musical genres, has passed away at the age of 70.

Blondie confirmed his death from cancer on their website, though no further details were provided.

“Clem was more than just a drummer; he was the pulsating heart of Blondie,” the band expressed in a statement. “His unmatched talent, energy, and love for music were integral to our sound and success.”

Described as a “rock & roll survivalist,” Burke began drumming at 14 and later joined Blondie in the 1970s after responding to an ad in the Village Voice. His powerful drumming style became a signature of the band’s sound.

Blondie’s success skyrocketed in the late ’70s and early ’80s with hits like “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me,” and “Rapture.” In 2006, the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Recently, Blondie unearthed a treasure trove of recordings, leading to the creation of the box set “Blondie: Against the Odds, 1974-1982,” showcasing the band’s evolution.

Reflecting on the band’s journey, Burke shared, “Looking back at our archives, it’s pretty amazing that we are still here today.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame praised Burke as a versatile drummer who brought a unique energy to every song, from subtle rhythms to fierce punk rock beats.
