Does TSA PreCheck Really Save Time? Survey Findings Revealed

A recent survey conducted by Upgraded Points has shed light on the effectiveness of TSA PreCheck in expediting airport security procedures. Contrary to popular belief, the survey findings suggest that TSA PreCheck may not always save members as much time as expected.
According to the survey, which polled 1,500 travelers with and without TSA PreCheck membership, those with TSA PreCheck reported spending an average of 36 minutes going through security, while non-members reported spending about 43 minutes. This marginal seven-minute difference challenges the conventional belief that TSA PreCheck significantly reduces wait times. In fact, TSA PreCheck times reported by members were longer than the administration’s estimate of only 10 minutes per lane.
Furthermore, respondents with TSA PreCheck revealed that they arrive at the airport only six minutes later than those without the service. Despite the perception of shorter lines at TSA PreCheck lanes, three in 10 travelers admitted that the lines were shorter only half the time.
TSA PreCheck Members Experience Lower Levels of Stress
While the time-saving aspect of TSA PreCheck may be debatable, the survey highlighted that 93% of respondents felt more at ease navigating airport security with the assistance of TSA PreCheck. Members rated their stress levels at 3.3 out of 10, whereas non-members reported significantly higher stress levels at 7.3.
Introduced in 2013, TSA PreCheck initially offered dedicated security lines and expedited screening procedures at over 200 airports. However, with over 20 million members, even TSA PreCheck lines can become congested.
Despite the potential time savings, TSA PreCheck offers other benefits such as not having to remove shoes, laptops, or liquids from carry-on luggage during security screening. Frequent travelers noted that this convenience could justify the $78 enrollment fee, which was reduced from $85 in 2022. Membership is valid for five years, with a renewal fee of $70 for another five-year term.
Ultimately, the question arises: Is TSA PreCheck worth it?
For frequent travelers who prioritize a stress-free airport experience, TSA PreCheck may be a valuable investment, especially if it is a benefit of their travel credit card. On the other hand, occasional travelers or families may find the convenience worthwhile if it means reducing airport stress levels.
