Fatal hit-and-run driver stopped, then drove over fallen pedestrian as she fled the scene: prosecutors

A tragic hit-and-run incident in West Town earlier this year has resulted in charges being filed against a 39-year-old woman named Iryna Kalach. The incident, which took place on January 24, left a 66-year-old pedestrian named Halyan Hudzan dead after being struck by a 2022 Mitsubishi SUV driven by Kalach.
According to prosecutors, Hudzan had the right-of-way and was in the crosswalk when Kalach’s vehicle hit her, causing her to fall to the ground. Shockingly, instead of stopping to help, Kalach briefly paused before accelerating over Hudzan’s body and fleeing the scene. She did not call 911, provide any aid, or report the incident to authorities.
Following the hit-and-run, the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit released images of the vehicle involved in the incident, appealing to the public for information that could lead to Kalach’s arrest. Despite the evidence against her, Judge Mary Marubio initially considered detaining Kalach, citing photos showing her in the driver’s seat and her alleged disregard for traffic laws and the victim’s well-being.
However, ultimately Judge Marubio decided to release Kalach, ordering her to attend future court dates. Kalach now faces charges of felony leaving the scene of a fatal crash and misdemeanor failure to render aid in connection with the incident.
This story serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and responsibility on the road. Hit-and-run accidents have devastating consequences, and it is crucial for drivers to prioritize the safety and well-being of others. The victim in this case, Halyan Hudzan, lost her life due to the reckless actions of another individual, highlighting the need for justice and consequences for those who fail to uphold their duty of care on the road.
As this case progresses through the legal system, our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Halyan Hudzan, who are undoubtedly grieving the loss of their loved one. We hope that justice will be served, and that incidents like these serve as a wake-up call for all drivers to prioritize safety and responsibility behind the wheel.
