From UberEats driver to NHL goalie: Inside the unlikeliest start in hockey history

Brandon Halverson’s journey to the NHL is one of resilience, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of a dream that seemed out of reach. Three years ago, he was at a crossroads, delivering UberEats and working odd jobs just to make ends meet. But fast forward to two weeks ago, and he found himself starting for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL, a feat that seemed impossible just a few years prior.
Growing up in Traverse City, Michigan, Brandon knew he wanted to be a goalie from a young age. His idol and mentor, Jeremy Kaleniecki, played a significant role in shaping his early hockey career. Brandon’s talent and hard work caught the attention of scouts, leading to his drafting by the New York Rangers in 2014. However, the transition to professional hockey was challenging, with tough competition and mental health struggles taking a toll on Brandon.
Despite setbacks, injuries, and multiple demotions, Brandon never gave up on his dream. He found himself playing in Germany’s second division, facing relegation and uncertainty about his future in the sport. But through it all, he persevered, determined to make it back to North America and prove himself on the ice.
A pivotal moment came when Brandon decided to take a break from hockey to focus on his physical and mental health. He worked odd jobs, delivered meals, and even trained beer-league goalies late at night just to stay connected to the game he loved. Eventually, he earned a tryout with the Orlando Solar Bears, where his hard work and dedication paid off, leading to a contract with the Syracuse Crunch, the Lightning’s AHL affiliate.
Brandon’s performance in the AHL caught the attention of the Lightning organization, leading to a two-year, two-way contract with the team. His NHL debut against the Utah Hockey Club was a culmination of years of hard work and perseverance, despite the outcome not going as planned. The support and encouragement from his family, mentor Jeremy, and coaches have been instrumental in his journey back to the NHL.
While Brandon knows that nothing is guaranteed in professional hockey, he remains focused on the present moment and grateful for the opportunity to play the game he loves. His resilience and determination serve as a testament to his character and unwavering belief in his abilities. As he continues his hockey journey, Brandon Halverson is a true example of never giving up on your dreams, no matter how challenging the path may be.
