Gai Gherardi, Who Made Eyeglass Frames Fashion Statements, Dies at 78

Gai Gherardi, the innovative Los Angeles optician who, along with a partner, revolutionized the eyeglass industry by transforming frames into fashion statements of individuality, passed away on March 16 at her Hollywood residence at the age of 78. Her sister, Heather Gherardi, confirmed that the cause of death was bile duct cancer, which Gai had been diagnosed with the previous month.

Describing glasses as vehicles for spontaneity and self-expression, Gai once remarked to The New York Times Magazine in 1993, “They offer the possibility of a multitude of changes in your persona; they’re a great accessory, a great prop.”

Known for their distinctive designs, L.A. Eyeworks frames, created by Gai Gherardi and her friend Barbara McReynolds, captured the attention of a celebrity clientele with their sharp angles, unique shapes, striking hues, and playful names like Rooster, Whirly Bird, and Mx. Busy. The shop’s use of laser engraving to adorn metal frames with intricate patterns further solidified their reputation as trendsetters in the eyewear industry.

The iconic advertising campaign featuring black-and-white portraits of notable personalities sporting L.A. Eyeworks frames, photographed by Greg Gorman, cemented the brand’s association with artists, actors, and members of the L.G.B.T.Q. community.

Gai Gherardi’s impact extended beyond the realm of fashion; she was instrumental in advancing eyewear design as a member of the Council of Fashion Designers, contributing to philanthropic efforts supporting L.G.B.T.Q. causes.

Born on July 8, 1946, in Los Angeles, Gai’s journey from surf enthusiast in Huntington Beach to pioneering optician underscored her lifelong passion for eyewear as a means of self-expression and communication.

Throughout her career, Gai remained committed to pushing boundaries and challenging conventional norms in frame design, earning her a reputation as a trailblazer in the industry. Her legacy lives on in the vibrant designs and lasting impact of L.A. Eyeworks, a testament to her vision and creativity.
