Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s dog likely died of starvation and dehydration, according to report

An in-depth analysis of the tragic discovery of a deceased dog alongside legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in their Santa Fe residence has revealed distressing details about the animal’s demise. The report, obtained from the state Department of Agriculture’s veterinary lab, indicated that dehydration and starvation likely contributed to the dog’s death.
The examination of the dog, identified as a kelpie mix named Zinna, showcased signs of partial mummification and severe decomposition. Despite the challenging conditions for observation due to the advanced decomposition, the report ruled out infectious disease, trauma, or poisoning as potential causes of death. The dog’s stomach was primarily empty, containing only traces of hair and bile.
Zinna was one of the couple’s three dogs and was discovered lifeless in a crate within a bathroom closet near Arakawa’s body. While two other dogs survived the ordeal, the loss of Zinna added to the already tragic circumstances surrounding the couple’s passing.
Authorities confirmed that Hackman succumbed to heart disease aggravated by Alzheimer’s disease, shortly after Arakawa fell victim to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome—a rare illness transmitted by rodents. Hackman, in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, remained unaware of his wife’s passing, underscoring the heartbreaking nature of the events.
Hackman was found in the entryway of the residence, while Arakawa was located in a bathroom. Similar to the dog, their bodies exhibited signs of decomposition and mummification, attributed to the dry climate and high elevation of Santa Fe.
Although both deaths were deemed to be of natural causes, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the timeline leading up to the tragic events. Cellphone data and last known contacts are being scrutinized to provide a comprehensive understanding of the sequence of events.
Zinna, a once abandoned shelter dog, had transformed into a devoted companion that remained by Arakawa’s side. The couple, known for their private lifestyle since relocating to Santa Fe, had requested the confidentiality of autopsy and investigative reports related to their deaths. The decision on the release of such sensitive information will be determined by a state district judge.
Gene Hackman, a revered figure in Hollywood, garnered two Academy Awards throughout his illustrious career, which spanned from the 1960s to the early 2000s. The couple’s legacy as private individuals has been upheld following their untimely passing, with efforts made to safeguard their privacy in the aftermath of the tragedy.
