Gotham FC investigating ‘hateful language’ levied at Barbra Banda

The recent incident involving Zambian striker Barbra Banda at a game between Orlando Pride and NJ/NY Gotham FC has sparked outrage and condemnation from the NWSL, Orlando Pride, and Gotham FC. The three organizations issued separate statements denouncing the “hateful language” directed at Banda during the match at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J.
Gotham FC was made aware of the alleged taunting when a fan reported the incident to stadium security. Security responded to the incident and spoke to at least one fan but did not remove them from the stadium. Additional security was dispatched to monitor the section for the remainder of the game, and there were no further incidents reported.
Following league policy, Gotham filed an incident report with the NWSL on Sunday night to address the allegations. A fan who witnessed the incident and identified as a Gotham season ticket holder shared their shock and disgust on Reddit, detailing the discriminatory behavior aimed at Banda.
The NWSL and Gotham FC are currently investigating the incident and may take additional action under the league’s Fan Code of Conduct. Gotham is reviewing security footage of the incident and has been in contact with the fan who first reported the incident.
Barbra Banda, who faced anti-trans attacks in November after winning the 2024 NWSL Championship and being named BBC World Footballer of the Year, received support from the Pride. The Pride praised Banda as an outstanding role model and advocate for soccer in Africa and the United States. Banda, a two-time Olympian, signed a four-year contract with Orlando before last season.
The online attacks against Banda were based on a 2022 controversy in which she was barred from playing in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, a World Cup qualifying event. Despite the challenges she has faced, Banda represented Zambia in the 2023 World Cup and continues to excel on and off the pitch.
The NWSL reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all individuals in its venues. The league stands in solidarity with Banda and other athletes who face discrimination and reaffirms its dedication to upholding its standards and values of inclusivity within the NWSL community.
