Grandmonther of Juneteenth gets land back

Opal Lee, the 97-year-old civil rights activist known as the ‘Grandmother Of Juneteenth’, was gifted the same land in Fort Worth, Texas, from which she was forced out by a racist mob in 1939. Habitat for Humanity, which owned the lot, decided to gift it to Lee when she contacted them to buy it back.
Habitat Humanity is also building a home for Lee on this lot. This gesture is seen as a way to right a historic wrong and honor Lee’s significant contributions to social justice, including her pivotal role in making Juneteenth a national holiday.
