“Grey’s Anatomy” star Eric Dane reveals he’s been diagnosed with ALS

Renowned actor Eric Dane made a heartfelt revelation on Thursday, sharing with the public that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare and debilitating condition that leads to progressive muscle paralysis.
In an exclusive statement to People magazine, Dane expressed his gratitude for having his loving family, including his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two teenage daughters, by his side as they navigate this challenging chapter together. He humbly requested privacy for his family during this time of adjustment.
Despite his diagnosis, Dane mentioned that he is determined to continue working and is eagerly anticipating his return to the set of HBO’s hit series “Euphoria” where he portrays the character Cal Jacobs. Production for the show’s third season is set to commence on April 14, following a hiatus after the conclusion of its second season.
Understanding ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease after the legendary New York Yankees player who battled the illness in the late 1930s, impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This leads to a loss of muscle control, ultimately resulting in the inability to speak, eat, move, and breathe, as outlined by the ALS Association. Approximately 1 in 300 Americans are affected by ALS, emphasizing the significance of raising awareness and supporting research efforts.
The exact cause of ALS remains unknown, with only 5% to 10% of cases demonstrating a genetic connection, according to the National Institutes of Health. The majority of cases are sporadic in nature. Regrettably, there is currently no cure for ALS, and individuals diagnosed with the condition typically face a life expectancy of 2 to 5 years, primarily succumbing to respiratory failure.
ALS does not discriminate and can affect individuals from all walks of life. Notable figures who have been diagnosed with ALS include former NFL player Tim Green, acclaimed singer Roberta Flack, and musician John Driskell Hopkins of the Zac Brown Band. The devastating impact of ALS was tragically illustrated by the passing of Bryan Randall, the partner of actress Sandra Bullock, in 2023.
