Gunman who allegedly fatally shot beloved NYC bodega-owner, grandma turns himself in: sources

The tragic shooting of beloved Harlem resident Excenia “Momma Zee” Mette has shocked the community, but there is finally some closure as the alleged shooter has surrendered to authorities. The 23-year-old man from the Bronx turned himself in at Manhattan’s criminal courthouse on Monday morning, nearly a week after the fatal incident outside Mette’s apartment building.

Charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, the suspect is believed to have shot Mette by mistake during a gun battle with Darious Smith, 23, near West 113th Street and Lenox Avenue. Mette, a 61-year-old innocent bystander, was caught in the crossfire as she rushed outside to check on her grandson after hearing gunfire. Tragically, she was struck in the head by a stray bullet, as captured in harrowing video footage.

Smith, who was arrested with a gunshot wound to his foot, is facing an attempted murder charge. Mette, known for owning the first black woman-owned bodega in the city, was affectionately referred to as the “Mayor of Harlem” by mourners who marched in her honor, including the Rev. Al Sharpton.

As her grandson, Jarian Jordan Jr., mourns the loss of his grandmother, he calls for an end to senseless gun violence. The community has come together to remember Mette and demand justice for her untimely death. It is a somber reminder of the impact of gun violence on innocent lives and the need for greater efforts to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

The march held in Mette’s honor was a poignant tribute to her memory, with mayoral candidate Brad Landers and supporters joining in solidarity. The surveillance video capturing the moment of the shooting serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence in our communities.

As we reflect on the life and legacy of Excenia “Momma Zee” Mette, we must also renew our commitment to addressing the root causes of gun violence and working towards a safer and more peaceful future for all. Let us honor her memory by advocating for change and standing up against the senseless violence that took her life.
