Harry Belafonte, the renowned singer, actor, and activist who is widely recognized for introducing Caribbean music to the United States and financing the civil rights movement, passed away at the age of 96 on Tuesday, as reported by The New York Times.

Breaking new ground for African Americans in the entertainment industry during the 1950s with his leading roles in films and musical theater productions was just the beginning of Belafonte’s illustrious career. His rendition of Caribbean folk and calypso songs, particularly the popular “Day-O (Banana Boat Song),” propelled him to global recognition as “The King of Calypso.” He utilized his wealth and public platform to advocate for civil rights and other progressive causes throughout his life.

Belafonte’s activism reignited after the 2016 election of former President Donald Trump, and he served as a co-chair of the national Women’s March protests in January 2017 against the newly elected president.

More information regarding this announcement will be released to the media.
